Dear CPB Friend:

I first got to know the Center for Practical Bioethics as a physician working with the Ethics Committee at Baptist Lutheran Medical Center, where I met Mary Beth Blake, one of the Center’s co-founders, and Sister Rosemary Flanigan, who taught us how ethics committees should function and how to do ethics consultations.

That’s how I got involved as co-chair of the Center’s Ethics Committee Consortium. The great thing about the Consortium is that it involves people from different regional hospitals and health systems all working together for the benefit of patients.

I’ve been able to apply principles and knowledge gained from my participation in the Consortium over almost 20 years in my role as faculty and program director of the Research Family Medicine Residency Program.

I’ve also been able to teach residents how to use Caring Conversations – the Center’s guide to advance care planning – to talk with their patients about how they would wish to be cared for and who they would want to speak for them if they couldn’t speak for themselves.

When the Center offered me the opportunity to join the Board of Directors, it was a definite yes!

In times like these, as incoming Board Chair, I’m especially excited about new initiatives like Ethical AI and the Civic Population Health project, clearly new areas of health ethics that need to be addressed.
