About the Book:
Too often, patients in American hospitals are subjected to painful, expensive, and futile treatments because of a physician’s notion of medical duty or a family’s demands. Lawrence J. Schneiderman and Nancy S. Jecker renew their call for common sense and realistic expectations in medicine in this revised and updated edition of Wrong Medicine.

Written by a physician and a philosopher—both internationally recognized experts in medical ethics— Wrong Medicine addresses key topics that have occupied the media and the courts for the past several decades, including the wrenching Terry Schiavo case. The book combines clear descriptions of ethical principles with real clinical stories to discuss the medical, legal, and political issues that confront doctors today as they seek to provide the best medical care to critically ill patients.

The authors have added two chapters that outline theoretical, legislative, judicial, and clinical developments since the first edition. Based on the latest empirical research, Wrong Medicine continues to guide a broad range of health care professionals through the challenges of providing humane end-of-life care.

Tarris Rosell, PhD, DMin, Rosemary Flanigan Chair at the Center for Practical Bioethics

The Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, as adopted and revised, affirms personal autonomy of those who wish to donate organs or tissue after death. Not even next of kin are permitted to revoke such “first person” authorizations to donate.

So what happens, or ought to happen, if the family says, “No!” to donation?

Tarris Rosell, PhD, DMin will examine this question and more during a 90 minute webinar scheduled for February 22, 2012 at 11 am Central.

Nationally, about 3,300 men and women die in American prisons each year. A decade ago, most died alone and in pain. Today, thanks to the creative leadership of a few prison wardens and superintendents, there are seventy five active hospice programs in this country.

They believe the provision of hospice care for dying inmates transforms lives: the life of the dying inmate and the life of the inmate caregiver.

Find out how during a special program January 30th at 5 pm at the Community Christian Church in Kansas City, MO. Serving Life, a documentary about the hospice program at Angolo Penitentiary in Louisiana, will be shown followed by discussion and review of a traveling photo exhibit about the program.

Joe Waeckerle, MD, has worked on the ground in disasters all over the world, including the Hyatt Hotel collapse in Kansas City in 1981. He tells Lorell LaBoube of the Center for Practical Bioethics that during a disaster medical professionals are challenged with changing their mindset to the reality of compromising care. It’s a mindset the public must accept as well, according to Dr. Waeckerle.

Dr. Waeckerle spoke during the Disaster Ethics Symposium and Public Forum in Kansas City on December 7, 2011.
